Daniel Craig has reportedly withdrawn from the upcoming DC Studios film “Sgt. Rock,” directed by Luca Guadagnino. The project, which was set to reunite Craig and Guadagnino after their collaboration on “Queer,” now faces uncertainty regarding its lead role.

Sources offer differing reasons for Craig’s departure. Some believe that issues in scheduling with his wife, actress Rachel Weisz, are an influencing element. Others suspect the disappointing “Queer” film at the box office and throughout awards season. Despite receiving a National Board of Review Award for Best Actor, “Queer” grossed approximately $4.8 million globally, falling short of its €48 million production budget.
With Craig taking a step back, DC Studios is already looking for options. Jeremy Allen White, who has lately been well-known for his work on The Bear, is apparently in the running for the position. White’s rough-around-the-edges, genuine acting approach could be a refreshing change for the character of Sgt. Rock, a character that has been part of DC Comics since 1959.
This isn’t the first setback for Sgt. Rock. The movie has been in development limbo for years, and this latest hiccup adds more uncertainty. Filming is still expected to start in the UK this summer, but the search for a new lead could delay production.
While fans might be disappointed not to see Craig in this comic book adaptation, the potential of seeing someone like White step into the role keeps the excitement alive. Whether it was scheduling conflicts or the sting of Queer’s struggles, Craig’s exit adds an interesting twist to the journey of Sgt. Rock to the big screen.
