James Gunn isn’t slowing down. Even as fans gear up for the release of his Superman reboot, the filmmaker has confirmed the next chapter in his vision for the DC Universe is already taking shape.
Speaking on the red carpet at the Peacemaker Season 2 premiere, Gunn revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he’s completed the treatment for the next story in what he’s calling the “Superman saga” and he’s eager to get cameras rolling as soon as possible.
“The treatment is done, which is a very, very worked out treatment,” Gunn said. “I’m working on that, and I’m hopefully going into production not too far away from today.” For those who don’t speak Hollywood, a treatment is essentially a detailed roadmap for a movie laying out the story beats, characters, and tone before the script itself is written.
The timing couldn’t be better. Anticipation for Superman, the first film in DC Studios’ newly rebooted universe, is running high. The movie will debut digitally on Apple TV and Amazon Prime starting August 15, followed by a 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD release on September 23.
Backed by Troll Court Entertainment, DC Studios, and The Safran Company, Superman has already earned early praise for its mix of colorful spectacle and heartfelt storytelling a hallmark of Gunn’s work. The cast is stacked, with Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, and Edi Gathegi joining David Corenswet’s Man of Steel, each bringing their own spark to the ensemble.
Critics have pointed out that Gunn’s Superman balances blockbuster action with genuine emotion, making it accessible for longtime comic fans and newcomers alike. While he’s keeping plot details for the follow-up under wraps, it’s safe to expect the same mix of humor, heart, and high-stakes heroics.
With the creative blueprint already locked in, the next Superman film feels less like a distant dream and more like a project ready for takeoff. And if Gunn has his way, we won’t have to wait long before the Man of Steel takes flight again.
